Congratulations to HOPE’s Teaching Kitchen Coordinator, Katey Powell on being appointed to the Lancaster County Health and Wellness Commission for District 2 by the Lancaster County Council. What an honor to serve our community in this capacity.  “I am passionate about devoting my efforts to prevent, promote and protect the health of family, friends and my community.  I believe our community needs individuals to fight for health and wellness issues affecting us,” stated Powell.

Katey recently joined HOPE in Lancaster to coordinate the efforts of HOPE’s Healthy Teaching Kitchen.  The goal of HOPE’s Healthy Teaching Kitchen is to provide tips and tools for low-income individuals to live a healthy lifestyle with the resources available to them. A six-month Senior Nutrition Class is being offered to clients of HOPE’s Senior Food Pantry. Twenty-four participants are currently attending these once a month classes which consist of tips on food preparation, exercise, nutrition information and more.  Several Registered Dietitians volunteer to help teach the classes.

To help fund the no cost classes HOPE has been offering monthly events to the public. Recent topics have included food budgeting using coupons, healthy food preparation, meal planning and holiday entertaining. The classes are offered on a suggested donation basis although everyone who makes a reservation to attend these public classes are welcome regardless of ability to donate to the Healthy Teaching Kitchen Programs. The March class featuring Tablescapes  is scheduled for Thursday, March 21, at 6:30 p.m. at the Lancaster Bowling Center. For more information contact Katey at 803-577-3300.

We are excited to have Katey join the HOPE family as she uses her gifts and expertise to help our community become healthier.
